Stolarz Out, Talbot In

A late night trade by GM Chuck Fletcher sends Goaltender Anthony Stolarz to the Edmonton Oilers in exchange for Goaltender Cam Talbot.

Flyers GM Chuck Fletcher made his latest move in acquiring veteran G Cam Talbot in a trade with the Oilers. It was first made public as of 9 p.m. Friday night.

The Flyers’ new goaltender, who will be the eighth to start this season if he does so, comes to Philly as a mentor and friend to rookie goaltender Carter Hart. What seems to be the main reasoning behind this latest acquisition is the hope that Talbot can help guide and advise Hart to further better his skills.

31-year-old Talbot, who is in his sixth NHL season, has started 31 games for Edmonton, posting a career-low 10-15-3 record, with 3.36 goals against, and a .893 save percentage. During one of his most impressive years in Edmonton, during the 2016-17 season, Talbot helped lead the Oilers to the Stanley Cup playoffs.

Carter Hart, when asked about Talbot, said, “He’s a great mentor. He’s a great goalie. He’s a great guy.” It’s clear Hart has lots of respect for the veteran, and he is probably excited to have a friend who played for his hometown team now in Philly to help continue mentoring him.

Anthony Stolarz will be leaving Philly having appeared in 19 games for the Flyers recording a 6-4-4 record, a 2.86 GAA, and .911 save percentage.

Many were ready to criticize Chuck Fletchers’ move but may have been too quick to judge. Based on Talbot’s career and postseason experience, he has the opportunity to only better prepare and mentor rookie Hart. It’s also not out of the question that he could turn his record around and continue to help the Flyers win games. Overall, the goal will be that the Hart-Talbot duo can lead the Flyers to their postseason hopes despite being 8 points out of the second wild-card spot.

The Flyers will begin a back-to-back, home-and-home series with the Detroit Red Wings starting Saturday at 1 p.m. in Philly and again Sunday at 6 p.m. in Detroit. Newly acquired Talbot is likely to start one of the two games this weekend. If/when he does, the Flyers will have set a new record for goaltenders used in a single season (8).
