Views from 116: Life as a Season Ticket Holder

Hello – my name is Eric Marturano. In 2016, I became a Sixers season ticket holder. Growing up in Malvern, PA as an avid Philadelphia sports fan (Eagles, Sixers, Phillies, Flyers, Nova) and even more avid NBA fan, it was a lifelong dream of mine to one day own season tickets for the Sixers.

I fell in love with Allen Iverson at a young age and the rest was history. As soon as I could afford it, I bought in. And what a time to buy in, it was! The Sixers were in the midst of their banner “tank” year. That’s right, I decided to pull the trigger on what felt like one of the larger financial decisions of my life during the 2015-2016 season that would finish a horrendous 10-72. The organization was thrilled – and maybe even surprised – to have my money. People in my life asked me, “Why in the world would you do that?”

As I write this in the summer of 2018, the Sixers have come off a 52-30 season in which a mostly healthy Joel Embiid and Ben Simmons led the team to its first playoff series win since the 2011-2012 season. People in my life now say stuff like “Wow, you sure bought in at the right time!” I’d like to think I’m smart, or perhaps even had the longest view in the room, but really, I was buying these tickets no matter what. I love basketball and I love the Sixers.

Over the past two seasons I’ve seen a lot that the average fan doesn’t get to see simply by
nature of showing up to most home games and team events. These include experiences such as the social dynamics of goofy in-arena contests, funny stories from fan appreciation events, how ticket pricing strategies change from year to year, how the organization messages news and expectations directly to its highest valued customers, and much more.

I wanted to write about these sorts of things and my experience as a season ticket holder in Section 116 because in order to find this type of information out, I had to actually live through it myself. I look forward to sharing all of my Views from 116 with you here for the upcoming season.

I’d like to thank the Sixers Front Office for having me on as a contributor to the site. Most of us met on the amorphous virtual insanity-scape that is known as “Sixers Twitter,” and I wouldn’t have it any other way. I’ll be writing about my Views from 116 every now and then here at Sixers Front Office. I will also be covering the Eagles over at Eagles Front Office.

If you have any questions about my life as a season ticket holder, or just want to give me a shout, you can find me @TheEMart on Twitter. I also run a podcast in my spare time called Two Paisani & A Pizzapodcast (formerly known as Necessary Roughness) with some of my pals from college that you can find at our homebase, iTunes, or Soundcloud. Looking forward to hearing from you!

I predicted that Nick Foles would win Super Bowl MVP after Wentz went down. Go Birds.
